Swing and Hip Hop have a lot in common: historically, musically, culturally and dance wise. Originating in african, street and club dances both dances offer a lot of possibilities for self expression, improvisation and community. How well those two dances and music styles can inspire and enrich each shows this video:

In our second festival in southwest of Germany we are bringing together Old School Jazz Dances (Solo Jazz, Lindy Hop, Charleston,…) and Old School Hip Hop Dances together and are looking forward to have a blast with you!
You can expect Workshops, a Community Talk and Parties.
We invite you to
- get to know historical, cultural and musical roots, similarities as well as differences in Swing and Hip Hop
- experience specialties in Hip Hop and Swing Dance
- integrate Hip Hop and Swing moves into your preferred dance style
- gain more confidence in self expression in dance
- gain more experience in Jam Circles
The event focusses on solo dancing but gives you ideas that you can take into partner dancing.

Hip Hop (Minn Vo/Marcus Scherf)
Basics about Hip Hop dance and basic Hip Hop steps
SWOP Choreography (Minn Vo)
Minn will practice a choreography with you that combines Swing and Hip Hop dance elements
Slide Dance (Karl Brochard)
exploration of sliding techniques, musicality, and fluid transitions through guided improvisation and movement research. A session focused on developing confidence, flow, and creativity through sliding techniques, combinations, and improvisation
Jazz Vocabulary (Karl Brochard)
Exploring and expanding jazz vocabulary by adapting movement qualities to various musical styles while staying rooted in the essence of jazz. A dynamic practice that challenges dancers to discover new textures, rhythms, and interpretations while preserving the jazz groove
Hip Hop Cypher (Azad)
In this class you will gain insights and understanding for Hip Hop cyphers (Jam Circles) and play with the groove in dancing
Practice with the Pros (Minn&Azad)
Practice everything you have learned with the support of Azad and Minn
Levels/Groups
For the workshops we will have two groups, we will try to make them two levels so students with different levels can take the most out of their experience. When signing up you can let us know which level you would put yourself into. We will distribute the groups trying to consider all participants.
- Group/Level 1: You have no or first experiences in any kind of Swing Dance, first experiences in Solo Jazz Moves, no experience in Hip Hop Dance required
- Group/Level 2: You feel comfortable in Swing Dance(s) and know some Solo Jazz Moves by heart, no experience in Hip Hop required

Minn Vo
Stuttgart/L.A. (Swing, Hip Hop)
Minn was born in Los Angeles, California in the United States. He is rooted in breakdancing and started dancing Swing in the 1990s and even got listed in the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame. He brought Swing dancing into Hip Hop: in the local clubs in L.A. as well as through choreographies for music videos like Lose Control by Missy Elliott or movies like Pearl Harbour. Today he works as a dancer, choreograph and stunt coordinator in the film industry in Germany and the U.S.
Karl Brochard aka Swinghappy
Paris, France (Swing, Hip Hop, Afrodance)
Karl teaches Afrodance, House Dance and Swing dances in Paris. He has an endless joy for dancing Solo Jazz blending it with other dances like Hip Hop and other music styles. He loves to share this passion and encourage students to find their own rhythm and expression of dancing.
Karl has won several competitions, including Jazz Roots in Paris and The Battle in Toulouse and was a finalist at the ILHC in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Marcus Scherf
Mainz (Hip Hop)
Since Marcus is 19 he has been dancing Hip Hop and quickly got into teaching the dance. He enjoys passing on the joy in Hip Hop dancing – for a while in up to 20 groups per week. He enjoyed most to learn directly from the masters. Since 2017 he has his own dance school in Mainz in which he exclusively teaches Hip Hop for different age groups and levels.

Azad Yesilmen
(Frankfurt, Hip Hop)
DJs
Since almost two decades Lenz is a solid part of the DJ and club scene in the Rhein-Main area. With a strong focus on technical Djing, scratches and a good track selection he has established as a resident in several clubs. DJ Lenz is the perfect DJ to combine both worlds. His heart beats for 90s Hip Hop with Jazz samples, he has supported Hip Hop artists like Jeru the Damaja as well as understands how to get a mainstream crowd going with fun music.
Since her early youth R’n’B, Hip Hop and Jazz were a big part of Trudes music taste. Since 2011 she dances swing and enlarged her music choice mainly in the Berlin scene. Since 2023 she djs herself and organizes swing events like the regular Swing-social in the bar club Schick in Mainz. She enjoys putting on Swing, Rhythm and Blues, Blues and Soul and is overstepping genres, f.e. towards Hip Hop.
DJ Il Bacino keeps the dancefloor drowded because as a dancer he knows what dancers want. He accidentally came to swing dancing. To Jazz he came through 90s Hip Hop. Il Bacino plays Swing, Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. In regular DJ workshops he gives insights about the relation of dancers and DJs – from floor to booth and back.
